What do you think?

What_do_you_thinkThe public vs. private beach controversy is back in the spotlight - this time over the "Leave No Trace" ordinance.  Started a year ago, it gives the county authority to remove any personal items left on public beaches after dark, and on private beaches, the owners of the items are left a warning, all in an effort to protect the environment and sea turtle nesting.  Private beach owners are claiming they own the land to the water and should be able to leave whatever they want on their private property.  What do you think?

Time to Renew That Beach Permit!

I was driving behind someone this morning that had a beach permit and realized - it's June 2!  We need to renew our tag if we want to drive on the beach next weekend - permits expire every year on June 1.

Here is the info from the Walton County Tax Collector's website for those with permits or for those with questions about getting one:

Limited Access Beach
Do you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle and want to access the Beach in Walton County?  Vehicle Access and Boat Launch Beach permits are available at the following branch office in South Walton:

  • South Walton Office | (850) 267-3001| Located in the South Walton Courthouse Annex on Hwy. 331 South | 31 Coastal Centre Boulevard, Ste. 700 | Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459

Permit Fee

  • $105.00 - For 4-wheel drive vehicles to drive on the limited access areas of the beach only.

Additional Info

  • Disabled persons are exempt from the fee, upon submission of documentation of their disability.
  • Permit renewals will begin on May 23 and new permits are available for issue beginning June 1 of each year at both offices of the Walton County Tax Collector.
  • If there are no changes to be made, you can renew by phone at 850-892-8121 with a debit or credit card and the permit will be mailed to you.
  • All permits expire on June 1, regardless of the purchase date.
  • Although many vehicles are categorized as 4-wheel drive and meet the eligibility requirement for permits, the amount of ground clearance on many newer SUVs result in vehicles being stuck in the beach sand!
  • Driving is prohibited from 10:00 p.m. until sunrise, with the exception of vehicles launching or recovering boats.

Attentiion Memorial Day Beach Goers!! Please "Leave No Trace".

Beaches of South Walton TDC reminds Beach Goers to "Leave No Trace" over Memorial Day Weekend

Any personal items left on public beach walkovers and accesses overnight will be removed from the beach Logo_large_3 daily as part of the “Leave No Trace” campaign, an international program that guides outdoor enthusiasts in their decisions to reduce their impacts while enjoying recreational activities.

“Leave No Trace” focuses on the concepts of beach maintenance and preservation. By ensuring that each person “leaves no trace” when enjoying the area’s beaches, waterways and natural lands, it helps protect and preserve this destination while ensuring everyone is afforded the same pristine experience. Therefore, personal items left on the beach from dusk until dawn will be discarded.

“Everyone wins when the beach is maintained. Clean beaches benefit the environment and economy alike,” said Tracy Louthain, director of public relations and visitor services for Beaches of South Walton TDC. “Leaving items on the beach overnight has a number of harmful effects ranging from items being taken with the tide and becoming litter, to impacts on nesting sea turtles to spoiling the area’s scenic beauty for which we are known.”

A Penny For Your Thoughts....

QuestionmarkThere has been much controversy surrounding the blue wayfinding signage on Scenic 30A (see story here).  Due to public pressure, the community identification signage was recently removed and the following new design has been proposed to take their place which, if you notice, is a familiar logo design.

What are your thoughts on the whole issue and/or new signage? (Use the comment section below to speak to us!)

Local South Walton Resident Tim Yandell is Running for School Board

Disclaimer *This post is for informational purposes only - SoWal Scene is not affiliated with and is not claiming to be for or against any candidates currently running for office*

I cannot tell a lie - I know very little about the political climate in South Walton.  There are no excuses so I won't throw any out there for sympathy but I have made the commitment to learn all about it this year.  It's an election year, no better time to dive in.

That said, what little bit I do know, I understand that South Walton is very under-represented in all sectors of the county government.  So I have decided to give all South Walton residents running for future positions an opportunity to have a voice on SoWal Scene.  And I'm starting with Santa Rosa Beach resident Tim Yandall who is running for the Walton County School Board.

Without further ado, I turn the forum over to Mr. Yandell.

"Living in South Walton (Santa Rosa Beach) has allowed me the opportunity to interact with parents and citizens South of the Bay.  Since District 1 runs from the Southwestern corner of Yandellfamilypic the county to North of Red Bay there is a substantial difference in the needs of the North end and South end of the district.  Being a graduate of Freeport High School but residing South of the bay I have the distinct advantage of understanding this diversity and how the differing attitudes can be balanced to form a combined, objective outlook.

My family has been in this area for many generations.  My children are the 5th generation to attend Bay Elementary.  An advantage of living in this area for so long is seeing the changes that have gone on throughout the years.

In the past, there were no schools located in South Walton causing an unbalanced arrangement of geographic political boundaries.  South Walton represents nearly 1/3 of the voting populace of Walton County while only having the potential to elect 2 school board members.  Now we are seeing the South Walton area grow at a surprising rate, which requires a person that has the education, experience and drive to readily adapt to those changes while understanding the values of different subcultures in both areas.

Current Weather Condition - Smoke

Newspapercottage

When Olivier and I first moved to the Emerald Coast back in the summer of 2001, we were renting in Destin and - I kid you not - the Local on the 8s report on the Weather Channel on several occasions stated that the current conditions were ... smoke!  New to the area, we thought this was a mistake or some kind of prank the first time we saw it.  But then it happened 2 or 3 more times over that same week.

For those that don't live here or who don't watch the Weather Channel, I should point out that our Local on the 8s report really isn't 'local'.  In Destin, you get the current conditions for communities to the west and in South Walton, they pull the info from Panama City.  Destin and South Walton aren't big enough to have their own TV feed I guess.  So as new residents not in the know, when we heard smoke but didn't see or smell it, we didn't know if we should take it seriously or not.

It didn't take long to discover that prescribed burning is a common practice on the Emerald Coast, especially in South Walton where about 40% of the land is protected state forest.  It wasn't until we moved to South Walton in 2002, into a adorable lil' beach cottage in the woods, that we could really appreciate the importance of this.  Several serious and destructive wildfires have ignited over the last 7 years in the community - one by WaterColor, one by Butler Elementary School and Flamingo Village, and last year, the ones that actually totaled several homes in Seagrove Beach and threatened many other neighborhoods.

Signs signs everywhere

SeasidesignSince moving to SoWal 6 years ago, I have been witness to a few events that have provoked substantial controversy in the community - the proposed Boys and Girls Club on the west end of 30A;  the shoring up of the beach after a few active hurricane seasons- with geotubes, retention walls and sand a different shade than the indigenous white sand that distinguishes our stretch of the coast; and the ban of the play Blithe Spirit at South Walton High School.

The  recent installation of the wayfinding signs up and down 30A and on the 30A connector roads, courtesy of the Walton County Tourist Development Council, is the controversy du jour and it will be interesting to see how it plays out over the coming days and weeks.  What is unique about this particular controversy is that the conversation appears to be happening more online than in the local media or around town in general between locals.

Scenic 30A will really be Scenic 30A soon!

Cr30aI think many of us do it - we call 30A - "Scenic 30A" or "Scenic Highway 30A".  Do a search on Google and 2,660 hits come up for it.  There is even a website called Scenic30A-RealEstate.com.  The description is fitting and I can see how it has become part of the SoWal vernacular.

But calling it "Scenic 30A" is a misnomer as technically it is State Road 30A according to the FDOTs website.  Well, unless it was previously designated as "Scenic" by the Florida Legislature but I don't believe that is the case.  For several years I assumed it was a designated scenic corridor but was corrected in conversation by a local real estate agent in the know.  Thanks to a dedicated group of locals, aptly named Friends of Scenic 30A, State Road 30A is slated to receive the FDOT's coveted scenic designation at the end of February!  Scenic 30A will really be Scenic 30A soon!
